Remembering my student days

Hello, I am Ganesh Prasad, faculty in the department of civil engineering, NIE. I would like to share few things (though there are many). I am teaching in this department since 1988 (I was graduated from NIE in 1987). To be honest, during my days as a student in NIE, (if I remember correctly) about 30-40% of the classes were not held due to one or the other reasons like strike for water in the hostel, strike for toilet facilities, strike for........
Ofcourse, there were some excellent teachers who taught me many things. Few of them are sri M.S. Alwar, Ramaswamy, M.D. Prasad who were extraordinary in teaching. At the same time there were few, who nether inspired students nor imparted any knowledge. one of my teacher during that time (I do not want to take his name) was teaching one particular subject of civil engineering for us. Listening to his lecture was really like listening to the sound of splashing rain at a constant rate continuously. Still I do not know how I passed in that subject. Even in internal assessments 95% of the students in the class used to copy from the books right infront of him(including me), but he never used to tell anything. Fortunately, I am teaching the same subject now, which I studied thoroughly only after becoming a teacher.
Another funny thing I can remember is, there was one teacher who was teaching fluid mechanics for us in IV sem who had a sound knowledge of the subject. Unfortunately because of his funny character, students used to bunk his classes. How! As soon as he enterd the class room, some would go out of the class just infront of him like Maharajas. Some used to jump put of the windows in to the corridor (at that time windows had only glass shutters) after marking their attendence.
There are lot many funny things to share. Will keep posting ....

I would say there were 4 broad genre of lecturers I came across 1. Knowledgeable and excellent at delivering the knowledge to the students. 2. Knowledgeable and not as not too good at delivery. 3. Not too knowledgeable but students need not worry about attending the class or internals. 4. Not too knowledgeable but makes sure that students do not get away with attendance or internals. Was fortunate to be a student of quite a few category 1 (mentioned above) lecturers who would always be remembered and Mr.Alvar was one of them. Also had the misfortune of having a few category 4s who again I would definitely not forget :) I am amazed to know that the tradition of STRIKE for any possible existed way back in 87. It was pretty much the same scene until I graduated in 96 and all the 4 years. I feel the trend might have changed after the introduction of the New Scheme for the students graduated from 1997.

At least someone agrees that they did not learn much in some classes at NIE. I usually never attended any unless there was no chance of getting the minimum attendance somehow else.
And, yes I did walk out in front of teachers right after they called my name and marked me present.
It is humorous looking back at it now ...

well it was really excellent. Those days our target were our teachers. As if our teachers were the ones who did something wrong. NIE has a history to have all the teachers qualified and I have never seen many teachers bunking classes. We may not like but they were quite regular to teach us. Our most important was the KUKU shop attached to the hostel where we used to take bread omlettes and tea.
The most exciting times were the times when we used to go back home after the semesters. That was the moment when students never cared for the semester results. Then was the time for the semester results. EXCITING WOULD BE THE APT WORD AND NAILBITING.
