B. Yadupathi Gowda received his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Mechanical Engineering from K.R.E.C Suratkal, Mysore University in 1968. He secured the 10th rank in this discipline among all University students. He subsequently obtained his Masters Degree (M.E.) in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore in 1970, specializing in Machine Design.

From December 1970 to November 1993, he served as a Lecturer and then Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at NIE, Mysore University, India. Known to the student community as BYG/Gowda Sir, he was an authority on subjects such as Machine Design, Mechanical Vibrations and Automatic Control Systems. He also offered Robotics and Kinematics Linkage Design as electives to the final year Mechanical Engineering students.
At NIE, he was instrumental in setting up the Photo Elasticity lab as part of the Dynamics Lab. He single handedly set up the Robotics lab and put lot of effort and time into it. He was also a co-founder of CART (Center for Appropriate Rural Technologies) which is a non-profit organization whose members are predominantly students and faculty. CART is primarily focused towards design and building tools for the rural society. He was the recipient of “Best Engineer of the year” award by the Institution of Engineers in 1980. “I am honored to write a few words about my friend and former colleague, Mr. B. Yadupathi Gowda. We were together at NIE for over 25 years working in the same department. I found him to be extremely intelligent, hardworking and a dedicated teacher. More than this he was an outstanding human being. Those students who had the occasion to interact with him owe their knowledge to the effective teaching/guidance of Mr. Gowda. Not only the students of NIE, but the students of other engineering colleges of Karnataka also were benefited by his teaching/guidance in the field of engineering. It was rather unfortunate that at least 10 batches of NIE students were deprived of Mr. Gowda’s lectures due to his sudden demise on November 9, 1993, when he had another 10 years of useful service. Personally I have lost a good friend and it is a bigger loss to the student community of NIE” -Dr. T.R. Seetharam

As rightly pointed by Dr T.R.S, 10 batches of students were unlucky to miss his teaching. He was a great teacher and will be remembered for his knowledge power in key subjects like mech vibration, M/C design and Auto control systems. Such perofessors are rare gems and I was fortunate to attend his classes for all three subjects. Also he will be remembered for his gentle atitude when approached on any problems.

H.Rao:
Prof Jayaram, now a distinguished academic in Europe and formerly a very popular lecturer in EE in NIE and a good friend of mine, has asked me to post the following tribute of his to late Sri Yadupathi Gowda.
"What distinguished late Sri Yadupathi Gowda was his utter modesty, extreme friendliness and a humanist attitude close to perfection. Though coming from different faculties we became good friends in early 1970s, and I still remember with nostalgia, many evening we spent together outside the working hours chatting on a wide range of subjects. Until this week, I was unaware of his demise, premature these days considering his age. I met one of my former students in Germany recently, who while updating me nearly 30 years of stories about Mysore, gave me the belated news. It was really a distressing news. He was a model academic to the core."

reading about shri gowda made me nostalgic and took me back to the days 1980-84 when he taught us automatic controls. no need to say he was master of the subject and deciphered the subject thread by thread so that even the dumbest of the students could understand. Great to hear about his achievements. It is indeed sad to learn about his sad demise so early in life. we as his cherished students will always rememeber in his cheerful but serious disposition and his enthusiasm for teaching. May God rest his soul in peace.
